Action heroes, anti-heroes, and generally strong, silent types in the movies, and even some serious leading ladies, also... tend to have movie-budget magnitude cool cars.

McQueen had many, perhaps most well known was Frank Bullitt's Mustang GT 390 fastback.

Reynolds had a 2nd-gen Pontiac Trans-Am with the iconic gold hood bird and striping, and the big monster V8...

The Transporter has his Audis after his BMW blew up. Ronin had his sinister black BMW also. Ryan Gosling's character in Drive had both a cool Collonade-era Chevelle Malibu, and somebody else's Mustang GT to beat on... Thomas Jane in The Punisher wrecked one GM muscle car, and then stole an assassin's Mopar, instead. Dax Shepard actually used his own Hot Rod Lincoln Continental in his own movie "Hit and Run", with his own wife, and IRL even named one of his kids Lincoln...

There are all sorts of movies, especially classics, that have cool cars to go with the cool characters... and in the movies it doesn't matter where they got them, how they paid for them or the modifications to them, or whether they needed a lot of maintenance, or how practical they were for day-to-day lifestyle... they were just COOL.

I think I may have found mine. A 66-67 Buick Riviera. I imagine that it is lowered on airbags, with a multi-link rear suspension re-fit, and a modern refitted front subframe, either chopped out of an Impala/Caprice, or a fully custom-fabricated unit, with SLA front suspension, and rack-and-pinion steering, with a big modern GM crate engine, and a 6-speed overdrive automatic, and a limited-slip rear differential, so that it drives like a modern, albeit big car, but looks like one of detroit's coolest, from their heyday.

If you lived in movie magic land... what would be your cool car? No practical considerations, just maximum overdriven cool.

Probably a '70 Ranchero GT. Similar in some ways to my project, but more cohesive and more Hollywood. Also, more aggressive and less silly.

2012 Boss 302 in dark blue with white accents. Mustangs are classic cool, and the 302 is better at handling and has more power.

Either that, or a Pontiac G8 GT in black.

EDIT: Replace the G8 with an ATS-V sedan in white with black rims.

Something like what Stallone drive in The Expendables:

Kinja'd!!!

Black F-100 with modern drivetrain, fully independent suspension, new steering rack and a large supercharged V8.

Looks supremely badass, handles decently well, can soak up a lot of damage and even double as a mobile weapon platform.

although I might go with a C/K Silverado and an LSX mill.

Essentially this, but lowered and flat black:

Kinja'd!!!

And yes, it would be a dually.

Any of those sound fine... and the ATS-V coupe looks pretty slick, too.

But a Kona Blue car, including a Mustang, is a great choice, too.

Kinja'd!!!

The white is a bit bold in over-powering the blue's subtlety, but carbon gray could look cool, too.

Perhaps... not sure if that suggests a non-stock suspension, or just an effect of lowering the body over the axle, which could possibly lengthen the wheelbase, depending on the geometry of the rear suspension mods on that car.

Kinja'd!!!

Although since the axle isn't centered in the wheel well on the stock car... increasing the wheel and tire diameter from the stock 15" wheel and bias-ply tire, to a 20" wheel and low-profile tire brings the tire closer to the back of the wheel arch anyway.

I am trying to place what movie genre that a Toyota 222D MR2 race car would be in... Rally Race movie.... Death Race sequel... the villain opposite of Herbie... Mad Max...

It would probably be interesting, though.

The 70-ish Chevelle is pretty popular, but likely for a reason.

Death Race had one a lot like the one you pictured at the end, and Drive Angry with Nicolas Cage had a red one, too.

Nice MOPAR choice. Somewhat reminiscent of the Plymouth Satellite that the country music assassin drove in The Punisher... that the main character took after wrecking his own armored GTO, and killing the assassin.

I've had this fantasy many times, and in it I'm always an undercover cop (think Max Payne meets Bullit). My dream car is a 68 Z/28. It would be blue, with Z/28 stripes in gunmetal gray, and matching powercoated wheels. Interior would be mostly gutted with modern gauges, recaros, a half cage, and 5 point harnesses. I would keep the rosewood wheel and a Hurst T-handle shifter as a throwback, though. And of course one of those removable cherries that sits up on the dash for pursuits.

It would have a thoroughly modern suspension - tubular control arms, chassis bracing, big brakes and wheels with sticky rubber, and converted to a Corvette rear transaxle/IRS setup. And the trans would have dog-ring gears. Dog ring gears are a must. Under the hood it would have an ITB'd, fuel injected, DZ302 with aluminum heads, high compression pistson, and a solid lifter race cam. Basically the Trans-Am motor they wish they could have built in the 1960's. The thing would sound like a bucket of bolts being shaken around at idle, and lope around town like it's going to stall. But give it the loud pedal and all hell breaks loose from about 4,000rpm until you bang shift off the rev-limiter at 9 grand.

My own runner up to that gorgeous Riviera above... this COOL colonnade-era 73 Chevelle Laguna pro-touring car, built by Sean Rich, save maybe a clean standard hood.

Kinja'd!!!

An even cooler version of the car that Gosling drove in "Drive"

Kinja'd!!!

Although I would love to see a mashup between a a Pontiac Grand Am colonnade coupe and a Buick Century Gran Sport colonnade coupe. The Grand AM's spear-point front end, a Riviera-style boat-tail, and the knife-edged front and rear fenders, similar to the Buick swaged body-line on the side, like the 66-67 Rivie I pictured at the top.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

I think the Grand AM's spear-point front, and the Rivie boat tail at the back, as well as the Century Gran Sport's elegant, but not over-whelming sides and Chevelle-like pseudo-fastback roofline, all finished in a Pro-Touring resto-mod modern-tech, modified-old-school fashion, like Sean Rich's Laguna, could be a VERY cool mashup that would look like nothing else on the road.

Maybe T-tops thrown in for good measure... there were a few special-model colonnade coupes with T-tops installed.

In a movie... it isn't your luck... it is a written script and cinematography. ;-)

If the script says you are the cool guy with a 427SC Cobra, then you have one, and the director makes sure there is a slow-motion walk-up scene with music and doves flying, and explosions in the background.
